요지

This talk is intended for the young researchers of Korea, particularly those whose academic focus is on Chinese literature, language, and culture. As a US-based Korean scholar, I will discuss ways of researching China within a broader approach to the humanities now evolving in the United States. I will also instance some of my work, including comparative, interdisciplinary, transcultural and trans-regional explorations devoted specifically to revealing a heterogeneous and interconnected past, thereby introducing an emerging focus within the realm of US East Asian studies. While addressing the underlying problems inherent in these approaches as well as the ongoing friction between them and the traditional notion of the field of sinology, I will illuminate the immanent challenges and increasing consensus as to the urgency of translating “sinology” into a multifaceted dialogue which spans a diversity of disciplines. I hope this talk will ignite discussions among young scholars of China in Korea, leading them toward a (re)discovery and (re)assurance of the field's value and role as a sustainable part of humanities scholarship in and outside of Korea.
